A British Weightlifting champion, he represented Britain in the 1956 and 1960 Olympic Games and was a successful businessman. Ben was a founding member of the '<i>45 Aid Society<\/i>, serving as Chairman from its inception in 1963 until 2016, when he became its President. He was awarded an MBE in 2000 for services to the community and in 2018 was honoured with a knighthood in recognition of his contribution to Holocaust remembrance and education. Amongst his many endeavours in this regard, he remains most proud of the achievements of the '<i>45 Aid Society<\/i>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5541-0-0-2\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"2\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Chairman<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>ANGELA COHEN<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17198 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.45aid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/AC.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Angela has been Chairman of the<i>\u00a0<\/i><i>'45 Aid Society<\/i>\u00a0since 2015. Her late father, <a href=\"\/memory-quilts\/moishe-malenicky\/\">Moishe Malenicky<\/a>, was one of the Boys. She now leads the Society with other members of the second and third generation, and continues the work of telling the survivors' stories at schools, universities and commercial organisations through an extensive education programme. Angela is married with two sons and two grandsons. One of her sons is TV Judge Rob Rinder, with whom she took part in a <a href=\"\/news\/tv-radio\/my-family-the-holocaust-and-me-featuring-rob-rinder-and-angela-cohen\/\">TV programme<\/a> where they visited Treblinka.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5541-0-0-3\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"3\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Vice Chairman<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>PHILIP BURTON<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft size-full wp-image-17200\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.45aid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/PB.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"268\" \/>Philip leads on communications, digital content, research and archive activities and event planning.\u00a0Philip is a proud Yorkshireman. He is married to Julia, daughter of <a href=\"\/survivors\/david-herman\/\">David Herman<\/a>, and they have 3 daughters. He chairs the British Jewish Community\u2019s Humanitarian Agency\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.worldjewishrelief.org\/\">World Jewish Relief<\/a>, which brought The Boys to the UK between 1945 and 1948, and served as an Executive Director on the main Board of Marks and Spencer.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5541-0-0-5\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor\" data-index=\"5\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Treasurer<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>ALAN GREENBERG<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17199 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/dev.45aid.org\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/alan.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Alan is the son of <a href=\"\/memory-quilts\/victor-greenberg\/\">Victor (Kushi) Greenberg<\/a> and has been the Treasurer of the <em>\u201945 Aid Society<\/em> since 2011. He qualified as a chartered accountant before embarking on a career in private equity. In addition, he became a mediator specialising in resolving business disputes. On weekends he can occasionally be found tooting his saxophone in covers bands or brandishing cards as a referee in amateur football matches.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5541-0-0-6\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"6\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Secretary<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>KIM STERN<\/p>\n<p>Kim is the son of <a href=\"\/survivors\/mietek-szternfeld\/\">Mietek Szternfeld<\/a> (Michael Stern). His father was born near <a href=\"\/location\/lodz-poland\/\">Lodz, Poland,<\/a> arrived in England in August 1945 and was one of the <a href=\"\/history\/hostels\/windermere\/\">Windermere Boys<\/a>. Kim married Judy and they have two daughters and three grandchildren. He knew nothing of the<em> '45 Aid Society<\/em> until his daughter Amy \"discovered\" it, having accidentally met <a href=\"\/survivors\/israel-krulik-wilder\/\">Krulik Wilder<\/a>'s grandson at a coffee machine in the office one day, whilst holding a copy of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.amazon.co.uk\/Boys-Triumph-Over-Adversity\/dp\/0753800322\">Martin Gilbert\u2019s book <i>The Boys<\/i>!<\/a> Kim became the Society Secretary in 2011, taking over from his daughter Amy. Kim is also actively involved in the <a href=\"http:\/\/ldpp.org.uk\/index.php\/about\/\">Lake District Paradise Project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><\/div><\/div><div id=\"pg-5541-1\"  class=\"panel-grid panel-no-style\" ><div id=\"pgc-5541-1-0\"  class=\"panel-grid-cell\" ><div id=\"panel-5541-1-0-0\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-first-child\" data-index=\"7\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Head of Education<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>SUE BERMANGE<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17197 size-full\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/03\/Sue.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"268\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Sue is Head of Education for the <em>\u201845 Aid Society<\/em>. Her father, <a href=\"\/memory-quilts\/bob-obuchowski\/\">Bob Obuchowski<\/a>, was one of the first group of Boys that arrived in the UK.\u00a0 He moved to Gateshead and then London, where he met her mum, Marie.\u00a0 Also a survivor, she was hidden in a convent in France during the war. Sue made a promise to her dad that she would continue to tell his life story.\u00a0 Together with the Education team, she set up an Education programme for second and third generation members, assisting them in putting together presentations, giving them confidence in public speaking and organising talks with schools and other organisations to continue the legacy of their parents and grandparents. She is married to David, has two children and four grandchildren and lives in Abridge, Essex.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div><\/div><div id=\"panel-5541-1-0-1\" class=\"so-panel widget widget_sow-editor panel-last-child\" data-index=\"8\" ><div\n\t\t\t\n\t\t\tclass=\"so-widget-sow-editor so-widget-sow-editor-base\"\n\t\t\t\n\t\t><h3 class=\"widget-title\">Welfare Officer<\/h3>\n<div class=\"siteorigin-widget-tinymce textwidget\">\n\t<p>JULIA BURTON<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignleft wp-image-17733\" src=\"\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Julia-Burton-45aid-300x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"230\" height=\"230\" srcset=\"https:\/\/dev.45aid.org\/COPYLIVE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Julia-Burton-45aid-300x300.jpg 300w, https:\/\/dev.45aid.org\/COPYLIVE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Julia-Burton-45aid-150x150.jpg 150w, https:\/\/dev.45aid.org\/COPYLIVE\/wp-content\/uploads\/2021\/04\/Julia-Burton-45aid.jpg 640w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 230px) 100vw, 230px\" \/>Julia is the daughter of David Herman, one of the Boys from Munkacs, Czechoslovakia. She has been Welfare Officer since 2012 and was the curator of the Memory Quilts in 2015. An experienced Holocaust educator, Julia has presented her father\u2019s story to schools, universities and other institutions, and is a member of the 45 Aid Education Team.
