Hirschberg was born in Wolfenb\u00fcttel in Germany in 1921. His father was an elementary school teacher who had been in the Theresienstadt ghetto in Czechoslovakia during the war.<\/p>\n

Sarah Hirschberg<\/p><\/div>\n

Hirschberg was on his way to Palestine when he got stuck in the UK when the war broke out. From May 1939 to August 1941 he was in the Millisle<\/a> training farm.<\/p>\n

He was one of the founders of Bachad and edited the monthly Cheynu<\/i>.<\/i><\/p>\n

Walter and Sarah married in 1941.<\/p>\n

They were wardens at the Liverpool hostel<\/a> and then Singleton Road<\/a> in Manchester.<\/p>\n

They spent a considerable amount of time at St Asaph\u2019s<\/a> in Wales, where their eldest son Menachem was born. They had two more children, another son and a daughter.<\/p>\n

The couple moved to London in 1948, Walter was the National Secretary of Bachad and executive of the Bachad Fellowship until 1952.<\/p>\n

They later moved to Israel and were among the founders of Kibbutz Lavi. They later changed their names and he became Benjamin Amiram.<\/p>\n

They retired from Youth Aliyah in 1990.<\/p>\n

Walter died in 2007.<\/p>\n
